ISAF doctors complete skin transplantation

KABUL, Afghanistan - An ISAF medical team successfully completed a complex skin transplantation on an Afghan in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan providence.

The 22-year-old patient suffered from several broken vertebras and severe burns following a car accident last month. He was brought to a nearby ISAF medical facility.

“The patient required three different operations in order to give him a chance,” said Lieutenant Colonel Karel, one of the surgeons involved in the transplantation. “For the last [operation], we had to use specialized medical equipment borrowed from an American forward surgical team.

“This skin transplantation is now a success,” the doctor added. “We expect the young Afghan to recover normally in the coming weeks.”

The treatment of this Afghan brings the total to more than 385 Afghans for whom ISAF has provided medical assistance since the start of 2008.
