ISAF Commander visits Regional Command West

KABUL, Afghanistan – General David D. McKiernan, ISAF Commander, made his first visit to Regional Command West (RC-W) since assuming command of the 40-country led ISAF June 3.

General McKiernan landed at Heart Forward Support Base (FSB) airfield and was welcomed by Brigadier General Francesco Arena, RC-W Commander and Colonel Fernando Horcada, FSB Commander.

After being shown the RC-W operational vehicles and helicopters, General McKiernan visited with Camp Arena Headquarters unit commanders and had a short office call with Brigadier General Arena. While there, he signed the visitor’s honours book and received an on-going and future operations briefing on western Afghanistan.

General McKiernan met with the main RC-W Afghan authorities including the mayor of Herat, the 207th Afghan National Army Corps commander and the chief of Herat police. Their meeting focused on security, reconstruction and development issues concerning western Afghanistan.

“I am happy to be here for the first time. I am honoured to serve this tight leadership of nations making up ISAF regional command in western Afghanistan,” said General McKiernan as he delivered his message to the soldiers of RC-W. “I appreciate the Italian contribution to lead RC-W. We are here, together, to win – it means to provide assistance to Afghans, to provide better life for all of them and a right to government.”
