Commander RC-W, Brigadier General Francesco Arena, salutes the parade. He is followed by OMLT commanders at Camp Stone.

KABUL, Afghanistan – The incoming Regional Command West (RC-W) Italian Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) took responsibility for the mentorship of the 207th Corps of the Afghan National Army (ANA) during a parade at Camp Stone, Herat June 10.

The ceremony was chaired by RC-W) Commander Brigadier General Francesco Arena. Among the guests who attended the event were Major General Jalander Shah Behnam, Commander of 207th ANA Corps and Colonel James Klingaman, Commander of Afghan Reconstruction Security Integration Command-West (ARSIC-W).

Colonel Caruso, outgoing Italian OMLT IV Commander, had words of appreciation for Jalander. He stated, “I had the honor to be your mentor but first you were my teacher.”  To the families of his soldiers, he emphasized, “They let us do our job with their full support and with peace of mind.”

After awarding Colonel Caruso with the NATO medal, Brig. Gen. Arena said that OMLT IV accomplished all of its tasks. Maj. Gen. Jalander added, “So far we have worked with OMLT as a team unit. This is what we expect from the new mentors.” Both Commanders Jalander and Arena wished the best success and satisfaction to the incoming Commander, Colonel Gian Luca Giovannini and his soldiers.

Mentoring and supporting the ANA is one of ISAF’s key military tasks. ISAF assists the Afghan Government to bring the ANA up to operating capability primarily through the provision of OMLTs. These teams support ANA training and deploy on operations in an advisory role. OMLTs also play a particularly important coordinating role between ANA and ISAF operations.
