ISAF soldier and two local nationals killed, others wounded during violent demonstration in western Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – One ISAF soldier and two local nationals were killed; and one ISAF soldier, 10 Afghan National Police and seven local nationals were wounded during a violent demonstration at Chaghcharan Airfield in western Afghanistan on 22 May.

The local nationals were killed or wounded by Afghan National Police after the protest turned violent when rocks were thrown and tents set on fire.

“ISAF vehemently condemns this violence. It is the people’s right in a free and democratic society to stage peaceful demonstrations. Violent demonstrations, such as this, have no place in Afghanistan. Violent demonstrations cause tragedies such as we have witnessed today,” said Maj. Martin O’Donnell, a spokesman for ISAF.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of all those affected during today’s violent demonstration,” said Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco, the ISAF spokesperson.

In accordance with ISAF policy, ISAF does not release the casualty’s nationality prior to the relevant national authority doing so.
