ISAF, ANP visit 50 Qala-e-Naw school children

KABUL, Afghanistan – The Spanish-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Qala-e-Naw hosted 50 children from a local school Saturday.

The students were accompanied by Afghan representatives from the Sergeant Juan Antonio April Sanchez Orphanage, built by the PRT an named after the Spanish infantry sergeant who died during his service in Afghanistan, May 26, 2007.

“Your success as students will someday play a key role in the development of Afghanistan,” said the PRT commander as he welcomed students.

During the visit, the soldiers showed children the explosive deactivation robot, used to control, collect and safely transport mines. Soldiers also took the opportunity to teach the children what to do in case they found ordnance and encouraged them to contact Afghan National Police (ANP) or ISAF soldiers in order to dispose it.

The ANP, also present, gave students tips on personal safety, including traffic laws to help avoid accidents.

Before leaving the PRT, each child received a backpack with several school supplies donated by ISAF.
