KABUL, Afghanistan – A delegation of five European Parliament members visited Herat Tuesday.

The delegates, led by the Honourable Ana Gomes, from Portugal, was also composed of two Italians, Romano La Russa and Giulietto Chiesa, one German delegate, Andre Brie, and one Bulgarian delegate, Nickolay Mladenov.

The members of Parliament were accompanied to the Italian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) by Regional Command West (RC-West) soldiers where Colonel Levato, commander of the unit, and Nicola Orlando, head of the civilian component, shared the reconstruction plan in Herat province with them. They showed the guests the completed projects and the main humanitarian ones planned to help the population.

The delegation was then received by the governor of Herat province, Hussain Anwari, and went to the Pilot Burn Centre, the new department for burn victims in the Herat Hospital. This modern infrastructure consists of 34 beds, funded by the American government and managed by the European Commission with Italian PRT donations.

The delegation left Herat for Kabul where they will continue their visit before departing home.
