Marines launch Operation Azada Wosa

KABUL, Afghanistan – ISAF Marines and the British forces of Task Force Helmand launched an operation in southern Helmand Province on 28 April.

The goal of this cooperative operation is to enhance the security for the Afghan citizens of one district in Helmand province, by engaging with leaders to determine what is required to bring stability to their district.

Marines and sailors of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24 MEU) launched the operation from forward staging areas in Helmand. They departed Kandahar province on ground convoys and by airlift into southern Helmand throughout the past week.

The 2,400-strong Marine unit is conducting operations as part of NATO’s ISAF. The MEU is a Theater Task Force, a position which allows the commander of ISAF to rapidly deploy the MEU wherever it’s needed to conduct full-spectrum operations from humanitarian assistance missions to combat operations.
