ISAF strongly condemns insurgent attack on civilian convoy

KABUL, Afghanistan – ISAF joins the international community in condemning the senseless act of violence carried out by insurgents when they attacked civilian construction workers yesterday, leaving 17 dead and injuring at least 12 others.

The attack on the road construction crew took place in Shinkai, Zabul province, as they were en route to conduct a survey.

ISAF responded to calls for assistance, airlifting the injured civilians to a hospital for treatment and assisting the Afghan National Army in securing the area following the attack.

“This attack on innocent civilians on their way to building better roads for Afghanistan demonstrates, yet again, that the insurgents have no respect for Afghan citizens or a peaceful future for Afghanistan,” said Brigadier General Carlos Branco, ISAF spokesperson. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families and friends of those killed today.”

Afghan authorities and Afghan National Security Forces are leading an investigation into this incident. ISAF is prepared to support with the investigation, if needed.
