Afghan civilian killed by Kandahar City explosion

KABUL, Afghanistan – At approximately 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, 12 March 2008, an ISAF convoy was travelling through Kandahar City when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated in the vicinity of the ISAF vehicles, killing one Afghan citizen.

One ISAF soldier was slightly injured by the blast. The soldier is in good condition and has since returned to his duties after being treated at an ISAF facility in the area.

The ISAF troops immediately secured the site of the explosion and at this time it is not known if other Afghan civilians were injured or killed by the blast.

“We strongly condemn this cowardly act against the Afghan people,” said Lieutenant Colonel Sarto LeBlanc, Regional Command South spokesman. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Afghan citizen killed by today’s senseless attack as they deal with their tragic loss.”

“This indiscriminate attack shows the depths to which the insurgents will go in their efforts to undo all the progress that the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has made thus far,” said Colonel LeBlanc. “ISAF is committed to working with our Afghan partners to counter those who threaten to destabilize this country.”
