ISAF, locals team up to put out
FOB Ghazni blaze

KABUL, Afghanistan – A fire started at approximately 12:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Ghazni in southeastern Afghanistan.

The FOB’s dining facility caught fire as a result of an apparent electrical short.

Flames quickly spread through the facility and the fitness center next door also caught fire.

The fire resulted in only minor injuries, but provided an unexpected opportunity to demonstrate the positive relationship that exists between ISAF and the Afghan community.

The Ghazni City Fire Brigade assisted ISAF soldiers to quickly contained the fire and prevent its spread to other nearby buildings.

The two buildings were destroyed, but no one was seriously injured.

“A situation that could have ended tragically was averted through the great cooperation between the paratroopers of Task Force 2 Fury and the local firemen,” said an ISAF operations officer.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but initial analysis indicates the fire started due to an electrical glitch.
