ISAF strongly condemns
suicide attack in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan – The below statement is by Maj. Gen. Garry Robison, acting commander of ISAF, regarding the suicide attack in the Paghman District of Kabul this morning.

One ISAF soldier was killed and three others were wounded during a suicide attack in the Paghman District of Kabul this morning.

ISAF forces were opening a bridge to enhance traffic flow to the Afghan population. The suicide attacker moved wearing civilian clothing along the river.  Once spotted, ISAF personnel moved in to question the individual when the insurgent detonated himself:

“I speak on behalf of COMISAF and all the ISAF nations in condemning the senseless act of violence that occurred in Kabul this morning killing and injuring innocent Afghans, including children.  An ISAF soldier also lost his life.

Taliban have claimed responsibility for this attack according to media sources. Nothing can justify this act of cowardice.  It has destroyed people’s lives and attacked the Reconstruction and Development progress that the bridge opening represented.

We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have died and been injured, including our ISAF colleague.

This is yet another example of insurgent extremists forcefully opposing the efforts of ISAF and the international community to improve the life of the Afghan people.  The use of suicide bombers is a clear demonstration that extremists have no respect for the Afghan population.  But acts such as these do not deter us from our mission, and make us all the more determined to continue to support the Afghan National Army and Police in the provision of security.  We remain committed to our cause and the Afghan Government, and in particular its people.”

In accordance with ISAF policy, the name and nationality of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
