Six ISAF servicemembers, three ANA soldiers killed in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – Six ISAF servicemembers and three Afghan National Army Soldiers were killed yesterday during fighting that began around 4 p.m. in eastern Afghanistan.

Eight ISAF service members and 11 ANA Soldiers were also wounded during the fighting.

A combined element of Afghan and ISAF forces was ambushed with small-arms and rocket propelled grenades by insurgents from multiple positions while on a foot patrol. The combined force repelled the insurgent attack with small-arms, machineguns, mortars, artillery, and close-air support.

The remains of an insurgent were recovered following the initial contact.

“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the soldiers who were killed and those who were injured in last night’s attack,” said Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco, the ISAF spokesman. 

All wounded were evacuated to ISAF medical facilities in various locations in eastern Afghanistan.

The nationalities and names of the wounded are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
