One ISAF member killed, 2 wounded in Kunar

KABUL, Afghanistan – One ISAF servicemember was killed and two others wounded during a firefight with insurgent forces while participating in Operation De Rock Bark Kooch in Kunar Province around 11:30 a.m. today.

Operation De Rock Bark Kooch is an Afghan National Army and ISAF operation to disrupt extremist activities in the area.

Acting on credible intelligence, Afghan National Army and ISAF identified and engaged militants as they prepared to attack the combined force.  The combined force used small-arms, machineguns, mortars, artillery, and close-air support to engage the insurgent force.

“ISAF’s mission to secure a better future for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will continue despite the dangers faced.  Day by day our troops make a very real and positive difference to the lives of hardworking Afghan people,” said Maj. Charles Anthony, ISAF spokesman. “Our thoughts at this time are with the family and friends of the soldier who died in this incident.”

The rough terrain in this mountainous region of Afghanistan has made it difficult to confirm insurgent casualties from the engagement at this time.

The wounded servicemembers were evacuated to ISAF medical facilities in Nangarhar Province.  They are currently listed in stable condition.

No non-combatant casualties have been reported as a result of this engagement.

In accordance with ISAF policy, ISAF does not release the casualty’s nationality prior to the relevant national authority doing so.
