Friendly fire incident to be investigated

KABUL, Afghanistan – Three soldiers from the British Army were killed and two others wounded yesterday when their patrol was engaged with insurgents, and they requested close air support. A single bomb was dropped during the intense engagement.

The incident will now be the subject of a thorough investigation that has already begun.

“ISAF feels deep sadness over the death of three soldiers killed in what is probably a friendly fire incident in southern Afghanistan,” said Lt. Col. Claudia Foss, ISAF spokesperson.  “ISAF is committed to finding out exactly how this tragedy occurred and how similar incidents can be avoided.”

ISAF has procedures in place to minimize the risk of “friendly fire” and takes these incidents seriously.
