1 dead in escalation-of-force shooting in southern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan – A motorcyclist was shot and killed by ISAF soldiers following an escalation-of-force incident Aug. 5 in southern Afghanistan.

The motorcyclist approached an ISAF convoy, did not heed the warning signals and warning shots.  As a result, a shot was fired and the Afghan rider was killed.  His passenger, riding on the back of the motorbike, was unhurt.

“We deeply regret the loss of life,” said Lt. Col. Claudia Foss, ISAF spokesperson.

“ISAF troops are trained to use clear and measured rules of engagement procedures and only fire as a last resort,” Foss said.  “Afghan citizens are urged to heed warning signs in order to prevent these unnecessary incidents.”
