Suicide bomber killed in Lashkar Gah

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan – Afghan National Police and ISAF worked together to stop a suicide bomber from killing police and civilians here July 31.

The ANP shot a suicide bomber after he tried to detonate his explosives in a busy street.  The bomber tried to get close to a police patrol as they walked through a crowded street.  The ANP spotted him trying to detonate his explosives and shot him.

The incident near Bolan Bridge, Lashkar Gah, Helmand, could have caused many civilian casualties had it not been for the quick actions of members of the ANP, according to an ISAF official.

ISAF explosive experts quickly arrived at the scene, provided a cordon and diffused the device.   They also recovered a suicide vest and other grenades from the scene.

“It was thanks to the prompt reactions of the ANP that the suicide bomber was not able to complete his mission of hurting or killing innocent civilians,” said Lt. Col. Bridget Rose, ISAF spokesperson.  “This incident underlines the professionalism and bravery of the Afghan security forces who play a vital role protecting the people of Afghanistan.”
