Investigation confirms death in artillery incident

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – An investigation by ISAF and Afghan National Security Forces into an artillery incident July 21 has confirmed the death of an Afghan child.

The death is in addition to the five Afghans injured in the incident in Kunar province.

The child’s death was confirmed after ISAF and Afghan National Police concluded a joint investigation in the area where the artillery rounds fell short of their intended target.

ISAF forces had been targeting a known enemy location.

Initial reports July 21 stated five Afghans were wounded.  Two boys received shrapnel wounds and were evacuated to ISAF medical facilities.  Three females reportedly received minor wounds and were evacuated to Asadabad hospital.

One boy continues to receive treatment at an ISAF medical facility.  The other was treated and released to his family.
