Turkish soldiers lay school foundation

KABUL, Afghanistan – The Turkish battle group and civil-military cooperation team recently laid the foundation for new sections of Bibi Ayse high school in Bagrami district.

A ceremony to commemorate the construction was attended by Lt. Gen. Saldiray Berk, Turkish corps commander; Brig. Gen. Tarik Ozkut, ISAF chief of operations; and Brig. Gen. Kasim Erdem, commander of Regional Command Capital.

The Turkish team met with school director Belkis Wadem and Bagrami mayor Muhammed Azim.  They also held a shura to discuss local educational needs.  Afterwards, the CIMIC team donated more than 100 school bags and stationery kits to teachers and students, and 120 wooden toys to the nursery-age children.

“Education is very important for a developing country,” said Wadem after the donations.  “Turkey places great importance and support on educational progress in Afghanistan.”

General Erdem also placed emphasis on education.  “We must build and support more school construction for the future of Afghanistan,” he said.

Afterwards, the group went to the nearly completed Baba Adem Seyfullah Mosque, where Haci Nur Ahmed, the contractor building the mosque, to check its progress.  The CIMIC team donated building materials two weeks prior to the project.

“The locals were happy with the donations and thanked the Turkish unit for its support,” said Lt. Serdar Eyiler, Regional Command Capital spokesman.

The school’s improvements feature a new kitchen and toilet facilities, and will be completed soon.
