PRT Meymaneh opens female prison facilities

MEYMANEH, Afghanistan – A new prison administration building and a separate wing for females prisoners opened here July 4.

Dr. Mohammed Qasim Hashimzai, the Afghan deputy minister for justice, Brig. Gen. Josef Blotz, ISAF Regional Command North commander, and Lt. Col. Jørn Erick Berntsen, Provincial Reconstruction Team Meymaneh commander, all attended to view the new facility.

“The justice sector in Afghanistan has many challenges, and having facilities is only one of them,” Berntsen said. “Hopefully, this will have a positive impact on the local community for years to come.”

The new prison administration building has 17 new offices for prison staff.

A separate wing for females has been constructed within the prison compound. The 320-square meter building contains nine cells, capable of housing two inmates each. The building contains a kindergarten, workshop, classroom and meeting room.

The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs financed both projects which cost a combined 200,000 USD.  The project began December 2006.
