Italian PRT opens pediatric hospital in Herat

HERAT, Afghanistan – ISAF’s Provincial Reconstruction Team Herat opened a new pediatric hospital here June 23.

“The curing of children’s ailments and their education represent two crucial goals of our mission,” said Gen. Antonio Satta, commander of PRT Herat, at the grand opening.

“With the realization of this infrastructure, we have contributed meaningfully to easing children’s suffering,” the general added.  “Our attention is focused on them because they represent the future.”

The pediatric hospital represents a big success for the Regional Command West, said Capt. Ettore Sarli, RC-West spokesman.  Not only for the monetary commitment but for its great social value, as well, he added.

The new 22,500 square-meter facility was built to meet the demand in the local community for a hospital specially designed to treat children, newborn up to age 14.

The building has two parts.  The east side houses administrative offices, hygiene, vaccinations, dermatology, pharmacy, emergency room, radiology, warehouses, laundry facility and waiting rooms.  The west side has ward rooms for patients, a blood bank, and examining rooms.

A nearby building houses power-supply generators and a connection to a nearby water well.
