1 person dead after breeching security cordon

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – One man was killed and another wounded by ISAF soldiers after failing to stop their motorcycle at a security cordon today in a rural area in Helmand province.

The cordon had been established following an incident in the area.

The men drove toward the cordon, ignoring ISAF soldiers' warnings, including shouts, colored flares and aimed warning shots.

“This was a rural area with very few civilians around and we were supported by the Afghan National Police,” said Lt. Col. Charlie Mayo, Task Force Helmand spokesman.  “ISAF forces opened fire only after they exhausted all reasonable measures to ensure their safety.”

The incident is under investigation.
