IED attacks injure 2 ANA soldiers in Ghazni

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Afghanistan – Two Afghan National Army soldiers were injured yesterday when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device at about 9 p.m., just outside of Karmal Khel village, in Andar district, Ghazni province.

An ANA medic on the scene attended to the injured soldiers until they were transported by vehicle to Forward Operating Base Ghazni to receive medical care. The soldiers suffered only minor wounds in the incident.

The ANA soldiers were conducting a routine patrol of the area as part of Operation Maiwand when the IED detonated.

“Once again the enemy has chosen to fight without honor or dignity,” said ANA 203rd Corps Sergeant Major, Sgt. Maj. Habibullah Chamkani.  “These cowardly attacks do not advance their cause, but only show us that they are scared to face us in battle.  We will not be intimidated by this; it will only increase our determination to eliminate this enemy, an enemy of the people of Afghanistan.”

Operation Maiwand is an ANA-led operation aimed at separating the civilian populous from Taliban insurgents in the Andar district.  With the aid of ISAF, Operation Maiwand has successfully diminished the capabilities of Taliban insurgents in the area, said Maj. Donald A. Korpi, spokesman for ISAF forces in the region.

“The ANA have proven their ability to combat these terrorists,” said Korpi.  “Their presence in the area has driven the Taliban into hiding, as time and time again the ANA soldiers have stood their ground and pushed the insurgents out of the villages and towns where they spread fear and intimidation.”
