Three dead, two wounded after vehicle fails to stop

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Three Afghans were killed and two others wounded today in Kunar province after they failed to stop at a traffic-control point.

A vehicle, carrying an undetermined number of passengers, failed to stop at a traffic-control point despite being directed to halt by ISAF personnel.  They used hand gestures and flashing lights to attract the attention of the driver, and then fired a warning shot into the ground.  When the vehicle still failed to stop and continued toward the ISAF personnel, the soldiers engaged it with fire.  After receiving fire, the vehicle injured a 10-year-old boy.

Two of the wounded were evacuated to ISAF medical facilities.

ISAF servicemembers were conducting meetings with local officials when the incident occurred.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted in conjunction with Afghan National Police and local leaders.
