4 civilians wounded by errant ISAF artillery round

KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – Four civilians were wounded during fighting between ISAF forces and Taliban extremists May 17 near the village of Garmser in southern Helmand.

The non-combatants were injured by an errant ISAF artillery round. Those wounded were given medical care at the scene and have been medically evacuated to an ISAF medical facility for further treatment.

“This is a regrettable incident," said Lt. Col. Mike Smith, Regional Command South spokesman.  "ISAF troops go to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties, and swiftly assist if they realize there are injuries," he said.

There are no further details available at this time.
