Task Force Helmand Transfer of Authority Ceremony

HELMAND, Afghanistan – At a Transfer of Authority (TOA) Ceremony held this week at Lashkar Gah, 12 Mechanized Brigade Commander, Brigadier General John Lorimer officially assumed command of Task Force Helmand from 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marine Commander, Brigadier General Jerry Thomas.

For the last two weeks, forces from 12 Mechanized Brigade have been replacing their counterparts in 3 Commando Brigade. During the TOA, Brigadier Thomas wished his replacement well for the next six months before embarking on his flight home.

“Every one of us knows that the next six months are going to be tough, but we have trained hard; we are well equipped and I know we are ready for the challenges ahead,” stated Brigadier General John Lorimer.

He added, “During their time, the Marines have achieved a great deal and the recent operation to clear Sangin of Taliban has been a success and demonstrates to the world that the Taliban can be beaten, especially as they do not have the support of the wider Afghan population.”

12 Mechanized Brigade is the third British brigade to deploy to Helmand since U.K. forces originally moved into the region in 2006. Task Force Helmand is made up of three battle groups in the north, south and centre of Helmand Province.
