Donation of mobile X-ray machine
to Balkh Hospital

BALKH, Afghanistan - Yesterday, a mobile X-ray image amplifier from Bundeswehr inventory was donated to Balkh Hospital as part of a humanitarian assistance package from ISAF’s German medical team based at Camp Marmal.  This medical device is mainly used during surgery, to assess the healing processes of fractures and of screws or plates on bone.

Balkh Hospital has many long-standing contracts, many having been established by the Norwegian NDH, the forerunner of the German medical treatment facility at Camp Marmal. The original relationship between and the field hospital and Balkh Hospital was started by the NDH, however, following the fire at the hospital in September 2006, German assistance was increased.  In addition to the support rendered by Camp Marmal’s fire brigade in fighting the fire, German tents were donated to allow emergency operations to take place as part of the initial relief measures.  Furthermore, German Government tasked the GTZ (German Agency for Technical Cooperation) with the construction of a solid building as an interim solution.

This donation is the second mobile X-ray image amplifier for the hospital and, along side previous donations of a mobile X-ray image amplifier, two ultrasound devices, various surgical instruments and several donations of medicine and dressing material, is another significant humanitarian aid gift for Balkh Hospital.
