ISAF Provincial Reconstruction Team employees ambushed

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Afghanistan – Two Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Afghan employees were killed and two wounded after they were attacked by gunmen in Yatman Khalay Village in Tani District April 5.

The PRT employees were driving from their village on their way to work when they noticed a white Toyota Corolla with 3 people inside ahead of them on the road. As they passed the vehicle, masked gunmen opened fire on their car.

One PRT employee was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three PRT employees were taken to Khost City Hospital where one of them died from his injuries. Another of the wounded sustained critical injuries and is undergoing surgery.  The last victim, a security guard, was taken to Forward Operating Base Salerno, where he is being treated for minor injuries.

The injured security guard, 19-year-old Qadir, has been working for the PRT for 14 months.  “I believe we were the exact targets of the enemy,” he said.

Although his family supports his decision to work with ISAF and the Afghan government, he admits he has concerns for his safety and his family’s.

“These are the enemies of the people of Afghanistan.  They do not want the people of Afghanistan to have a prosperous life,” said Chief of Police of Khowst Province, General Ayoub.

“The Afghans murdered today were working with the governor and the PRT; they were working for the people of Khowst, bringing in projects, roads and medical assistance.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families. This was a horrific crime by a desperate enemy,” said Maj Donald Korpi, an ISAF spokesman.
