Convoy strikes child in Puli Alam

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Khowst Afghanistan – An Afghan child was hit and killed by an International Security Assistance Forces vehicle while traveling through the Puli Alam bazaar today.

The convoy was heading north through Puli Alam around 10:15 a.m., from Gardez to Kabul, when the child darted from the side of the road and hit the lead vehicle near the right rear tire.

The regional local commander for ISAF soldiers in Logar Province, Lt Col Steven Baker, said today’s accident was a tragic event for the family.

“Any time an innocent life is lost or a person is injured, especially that of a child, it hits home especially hard,” Baker said.  “Many of us are parents and we can only imagine the pain and grief this type of accident causes.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of this child.  We will continue to do all we can to prevent these types of accidents from occurring.”

ISAF and Afghan officials ask that all Afghan citizens avoid crossing the roads while convoys pass.

Lt Col Baker said a joint investigation between the local Afghan Security Forces and ISAF is ongoing.
