Nuristan PRT, local leaders plan provincial development

JALALABAD AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Leaders from ISAF’s Nuristan Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) met with key local officials to discuss regional development at the Nurgaram District Center, March 16.

Lt Col Todd Brown, the PRT commander, discussed micro hydro projects in the Mandol District of Nuristan province with project contractors and sub-governors from the Mandol, Doab, and Nurgaram districts. Micro hydros are facilities which channel water to a generator in order to produce electricity, typically for villagers living in remote areas. A contractor from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Afghan Engineer District, provided a full briefing to the Mandol, Doab and Nurgaram sub-governors. The contractor agreed to ensure his field representatives update the sub-governors on project progress.

Brown and Lt Col Chris Cavoli, the commander of 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, Task Force (TF) Spartan, met separately with road project managers. The commanders and planners discussed the road building efforts, regional transportation and infrastructure. The leaders developed strategies to engage the road contractors during the development meetings, focusing on accelerating road construction and employment of local laborers.

The meeting marked the first in a series of gatherings planned to discuss provincial development. Future meetings will include leaders from 4th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery Regiment, TF Spartan, who will play a prominent role in administering regional products in the near term.
