ISAF, ANSF respond in border incident with indirect fire

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Afghanistan – In a joint response to a mortar attack by insurgents the Afghan National Security Forces and International Security Assistance Forces fired ten 105mm artillery rounds near the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

At 5:12 p.m., insurgents fired 10 mortar rounds at security forces based in Gayan District near Lawra Dashto.  The ISAF counter fire was in response to this attack.

The border region between these two countries has been widely discussed in recent weeks as both nations work together to prevent extremsits from using the mountainous region as a safe haven for their activities.

At this time there are no reports of ISAF or Afghan casualties.

A joint investigation between Afghanistan and Pakistan officials into the mortar attack on the base is ongoing.
