Jalalabad PRT leaders join Nangarhar governor,
district officials for ‘plastering ceremony’

JALALABAD AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Key leaders from the Jalalabad Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) joined regional political and religious leaders for a “plastering ceremony” conducted March 13 at a mosque under construction at the Achin District Center.

The ceremony marks the start of the final phase of mosque refurbishment, previously stalled because of inadequate support.

Gov. Gul Agha Sherzai and Muwuali Sajeed, the director of the hajj and mosque, participated alongside district sub-governors from the Achin, Spin Ghar and Shinwar districts of Nangarhar province, Afghan National Army leaders and Jalalabad PRT members. Lt. Col. Dave Naisbitt, PRT commander, Capt. Neil Thowe, officer in charge of the PRT Civil Affairs team and Danny Hall of the U.S. State Department represented the International Security Assistance Force at the event.

The building, the largest in the area, will serve as the main mosque during Friday prayers and Muslim holidays for the Achin and Spin Ghar districts.

Sherzai, the director of the hajj and mosque, and the sub-governors thanked ISAF personnel and the international community for their support in rebuilding Afghanistan and willingness to support Islam through finishing the mosque, and providing loudspeakers and carpets.

The project, Thowe noted, demonstrates that ISAF understands the importance of Islam to the people of Afghanistan, “and it demonstrates that we not only understand it, but support it. It also demonstrates the outreach of the government of Nangarhar as they recommended the project, along with the director of the hajj.”
