Gifts for Now Ruz

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - In the spirit of giving during the time of Now Ruz, the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), Afghan National Police (ANP), and Afghan Government gave gifts to about 150 families who reside in the area surrounding the PRT and ANP buildings.  The gift bags included food items, blankets, schoolbags, and radios, all purchased by the PRT.

“Unlike under the Taliban, Afghans are now able to celebrate holidays such as Now Ruz,” said Lt. Col Bob Chamberlain, commander of the PRT.  “My team is also working hard to learn about Afghan traditions and be as culturally sensitive as possible with our neighbors.”

Over 40 kilograms of items were distributed to each family.  Local Afghans took time to exchange smiles and thank yous with PRT, ANP, and government personnel.

The Kandahar PRT consists of Canadian Forces members, a civilian police contingent led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Correctional Services Canada, representatives of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency.

The PRT conducts coordinated interdepartmental operations to promote good governance, assists the Government of Afghanistan in extending its authority in the province of Kandahar, and facilitates the development of a stable, secure and self-sustaining environment for the people of Afghanistan, Chamberlain said.
