Roadside bomb targets ISAF convoy; kills Afghan child

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – At 11:30 a.m. today, a vehicle, parked by the side of the road, exploded next to an ISAF convoy heading east on Highway 1 near the village of Howz-e-Madad.  An Afghan child was killed and three other Afghans, including two children, were severely injured during the attack. One ISAF soldier suffered minor injuries.

The injured Afghans were immediately evacuated by ANSF forces to a nearby ISAF Forward Operating Base and then evacuated by helicopter to an ISAF medical facility.

“This is another example of the Taliban extremist’s callous disregard for human life. They target ISAF and Government of Afghanistan forces; however, in doing so, they indiscriminately kill and maim innocent Afghans, including children,” stated Major General Ton van Loon.

“I commend the work of the ANSF for their immediate actions to evacuate the injured civilians and I have instructed my forces to provide the same urgent and professional medical care that ISAF and ANSF personnel receive during these types of attacks,” he added.
