International Women’s Day Celebrations in Tarin Kowt

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – On March 11, International Women’s Day celebrations took place at the Department of Women’s Affairs in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan Province. Uruzgan Provincial Minster of Women’s Affairs Fristha initiated this event; approximately 50 local Afghan women attended the event.

As a gift to all attendees, Minister Fristha handed out fabric to all the women. She was able to purchase the textile for the attendees through the financial aid provided to her department by ISAF’s 1 Dutch/Australian Provincial Reconstruction Team and Task Force Uruzgan.

“To emphasise the important role women have throughout Afghanistan and the improvement of development and education, today’s event was attended by Uruzgan Governor Munib. In his speech he thanked all the women for their effort and presence on this remarkable day,” stated Major Eric Jonkers, spokesperson for Task Force Uruzgan.

ISAF female soldiers from Task Force Uruzgan also attended today’s celebrations which included local Afghan teachers, hospital staff and women from local villages in the area.

Even though International Women’s Day is officially held on 8 March, Minister Fristha was in Kabul for official government business last week and did not want this opportunity to go unnoticed, thus it was held yesterday.
