Attempted suicide bomb attack in Khowst

FORWARD OPERATING BASE SALERNO, Afghanistan – At approximately 11 a.m. today, a suicide bomber attempted to attack the opening of Khowst City hospital’s new Emergency Room, injuring a number of ISAF troops.

A civilian vehicle approached and failed to stop at an Afghan National Security Force checkpoint. ISAF troops opened fire, forcing the driver to exit the car. As the bomber continued to approach the gathering, ISAF soldiers tackled him to the ground where he self-detonated.

Six ISAF personnel were injured in the attack and have been evacuated to an ISAF medical facility for treatment.

The incident is under investigation by ISAF and Afghan officials.
