Suspected bomb making facility disrupted

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) supported by ISAF troops took part in a joint operation on Sunday to disrupt a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) cell in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan province. The operation led to the capture of 10 suspected insurgents.

During the operation, ANSF and ISAF were engaged by enemy forces located within the suspected IED compound. Regrettably, two Afghan National Police (ANP) officers and one Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier were killed, while seven ANSF were wounded. All injured personnel are being treated at an ISAF medical facility. No ISAF personnel sustained injuries during this operation.

“Evidence was discovered within the compound to indicate that an IED cell was operating within Tarin Kowt to target ANSF and ISAF forces,” stated Dutch Colonel J.F. van Griensven, Commander, ISAF Task Force Uruzgan.

“The success of this operation sends a direct message to insurgents that we will not tolerate their attempts to hamper reconstruction and development efforts and initiatives taking place in Uruzgan,” he added.
