PRTs assist local schools in eastern Afghanistan

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) around eastern Afghanistan have been distributing supplies to schools in the region.

The Jalalabad PRT distributed teacher kits, student kits, hygiene kits, first-aid kits and tarps to the Char Bagh Girls Middle School in Sirkh Rod District, Nangarhar province. Also given out were notebooks, note pads, pens, pencils, kites, water bottles, folders, rulers and other miscellaneous office supplies.

A further donation in Nangarhar provided local Afghans 8,000 student kits and 300 tarpaulins as part of a series of humanitarian aid drops by the Jalalabad PRT reaching back to July 2006.

The Director of Education, Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal, has assisted ISAF to ensure that the supplies are donated to those schools most in need of help.

Since the programme began, more than 7,000 teacher kits, 14,800 student kits, 1,450 tarps and 200 white boards and chalkboards have been given to the Afghan Department of Education.

The Nuristan PRT also visited the Girl’s School in Nengaresh to carry out quality control checks on a roof repair project. The contractor still needs to replace several windows to fully complete the project. The finished project will be ready for a ribbon-cutting ceremony early next week.
