Jalalabad PRT supports community projects

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – ISAF soldiers at the Jalalabad Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) are actively involved in several community projects and initiatives undertaken in Nangarhar province.

On Wednesday, acting on a request from the Nangarhar provincial government, the PRT’s soldiers donated clothing, toys, various supplies and blankets to the Director of Hajj and Mosque, the Director of Women’s Affairs and the Afghanistan Women’s Council and Orphanage.

As part of another initiative, Hanif Gerdiwal, the Nangarhar Director of Education, requested assistance from the PRT to start soccer and volleyball leagues in the city’s schools. The PRT has helped to provide more than 2,000 t-shirts in 10 different colours for the different teams in addition to donating 325 soccer balls, 125 volleyballs.

Jalalabad City Mayor, Abdul Ghafar Pacha, is also working with the PRT to bring a Cash-for-Work project to the province’s people. According to the mayor, one such project employs more than 150 people clearing the canals and drains throughout Jalalabad. In the last two weeks, labourers have cleared more than 20 kilometres of canal of debris and waste.
