PRT Farah funds new vaccine storage facility

Farah, Afghanistan – The Farah Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) funded a new $45,000 vaccine cold storage facility which will benefit the province’s vaccination campaign.

The province’s public health department holds three to six vaccination campaigns a year to prevent medical problems such as measles, polio, whooping cough and diphtheria.

Farah’s old storage facility was in such poor condition the vaccines had to be stored in Herat and transported to Farah as required. The new building is equipped with air conditioners and an upgraded electrical power grid, which will allow the vaccines to remain at the proper temperatures throughout the year.

“The vaccination teams will be able to go out on a more frequent basis and cover the vaccination program for the entire province,” said U.S Navy Lt. Cmdr. Paul Johnstone, one of PRT Farah’s doctors.
