ISAF forces recover a weapons cache in Gereshk

HELMAND, Afghanistan – Today, Afghan National Army and ISAF troops in Helmand recovered a weapons cache in Gereshk district during a combined patrol. The troops were on reconnaissance patrol in the area of Habi Balar Qualah as part of ongoing operations to establish a secure 'buffer' zone in the area around Gereshk.

The patrol was engaged by insurgents with gunfire, rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and mortars from a number of positions and returned fire. Close air support was requested and engaged the insurgents. One ANA soldier was injured and immediately evacuated to an ISAF medical facility.

Fighting continued as ISAF Forces moved into an insurgent compound where they found and recovered a weapons cache including AK-47, grenades, RPG, Improvised Explosive Device components and ammunition. They also discovered and destroyed mortar firing points.
