PRT Mehtar Lam helps disabled in Laghman

FORWARD OPERATING BASE MEHTAR LAM, Afghanistan - Yesterday, the Mehtar Lam Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) assisted the Afghan Blind Migration organization in its efforts to care for disabled Afghans in Laghman province.

The PRT donated 60 bundles of humanitarian assistance supplies filled with food, blankets, hygiene products and other items to the organization as part of on-going support for the people of Laghman province.

“I am trying to help the blind and disabled because I am also blind,” said Niamatullah Rekazai, Afghan Blind Migration director for Laghman province, through an interpreter. “I am doing this not for myself, but to help others.”

Staffed by 18 volunteers, including 14 women, the Laghman Blind Migration office, established in 2002, helps those with disabilities and poor women, regardless of handicap. The organization also offers programs to help non-disabled Afghans find work.

“Knowing what the Afghan Blind Migration director does to help the poor women and disabled in Laghman makes it easy to support what he does,” said U.S. Army Capt. Bernice Logan, Mehtar Lam PRT civil affairs officer.

Since April 2005, the Mehtar Lam PRT has conducted 92 humanitarian assistance drops and donated over $500,000 in supplies to the people of Laghman province.
