Locals in Ghowr province turn in illegal weapons

CHAGHCHARAN, Afghanistan – Members of ISAF’s Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) participated in a two-day Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) ceremony Wednesday and Thursday in Ghowr province with the province’s governor and police chief.

The DIAG collects illegal weapons. Among the weapons turned in to the Afghan National Police (ANP) by local residents were AK-47 assault rifles, RPG rocket launchers, and PPS submachine guns.

During the ceremony, Col. Almantas Leika, the PRT’s commander, emphasized that every weapon turned into authorities promotes security and prosperity in the province. “By collecting weapons, the ANP demonstrate the professional responsibility for the safe and secure environment for citizens of Ghowr province,” he said.
