Chagcharan, Afghanistan - 24 September 2006

ISAF held a ceremony celebrating the beginning of Ramadan at the Lithuanian led Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at Chaghcharan, on Thursday.

Using scenery and props built especially for the event, ISAF soldiers watched 300 children recite passages from the Holy Quaran, poetry and national songs and dances, ending with the presentation of the two-part drama, "The Rich Man." Each child received sweets, fruit and chips as well as a set of stationary.

The Commander of PRT Chaghcharan, Colonel Vilmas Šatas, the Governor of Ghor S.A.A. Afzali, and a representative from American company KBR (Kellogg, Brown & Root) welcomed the visitors.

"ISAF soldiers once again show that they respect local traditions and religion," said the Governor of Ghor during his welcoming speech.

Participating in the event were; the governor of Ghor Province, Mr. Shah Abdul Ahad Afzali, the Chief of Ghor Police, General Shah Jahan Naserullah Noori, and 30 local dignitaries. Col. V.Šatas presented certificates of appreciation to the dignitaries that marked the beginning of Ramadan.

Since arriving in June 2005, ISAF soldiers serving in Ghor Province have had a close relationship with the Chagcharan children's home. In that time, doors and windows have been provided for six buildings of the children's home and the ISAF soldiers regularly donate clothes, toys and educational materials. A project to construct a new building for the home is now well underway.

Two hundred orphaned children live at the Chaghcharan children's home, with an additional 150 from extremely poor families staying there during the day. There is also a nursery and a primary school.
