Chairman of Military Committee addresses 56th Annual Conference of NATO Defense College Anciens

Rome, 25 September – Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola delivered the Opening Speech to the Anciens participating in the 56th Annual Conference of the NATO Defense College (NDC).
The 2009 Conference, entitled “From Washington to Lisbon – Towards a New Strategic Concept”, was dedicated to the ongoing discussions that will lead to the drafting of the Alliance’s new guiding document.
The list of the speakers included H.E. Mr. Claudio Bisogniero, NATO Deputy Secretary-General, H.E. Mr Robert Hunter, Former US Ambassador to NATO, General Jean-Louis Georgelin, French Chief of Defence, H.E. Mr Zoltan Martinusz, Head of Directorate for the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EU Council) and H.E. Mr. Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of Munich Security Conference.
The plenary discussion that followed the speeches was once again an opportunity for a frank exchange of ideas about the Alliance’s nature and role, present and future.
The last Strategic Concept for the Alliance is dated 1999. The Alliance intends to produce a new document by the end of next year.
