Bullet The Military Committee: NATO's senior military authority

Top military officers of the Alliance’s member and Partner nations will meet at NATO HQ, Brussels from 09-10 May for their Spring meetings at Chiefs of Defence Staff level.

The following key military issues are scheduled to be discussed:

  • Operations, including taking stock of all current NATO-led operations and missions and in particular the ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
  • Transformation, including furthering the work to develop a more holistic approach to military operations with partners, international organisations, NGOs and local actors; discussing the status and future work of the NATO Command Structure review; managing financial resources in light of the increased operational tempo; and reviewing developments to improve long term sustainability and training, in the broader sense, of the NATO Response Force.
  • Overview with Partners of experiences, achievements and challenges, including briefings from Albania and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia(1), (aspirant nations), the Republic of Serbia (a recent member of the Partnership for Peace programme) and Switzerland.
  • Ukraine, to review progress of the 2007 NATO-Ukraine Work plan.
  • Russia, to review and note progress on operational matters, and to assess the progress of military-to-military cooperation efforts.

The Military Committee, permanently based in Brussels, is NATO’s highest military authority, holding formal meetings at Chiefs of Defence Staff level three times a year, including twice in Brussels.  The meetings convene in five different sessions:  NATO member nations; NATO with Partnership for Peace nations; NATO with the 7 Mediterranean Dialogue countries; NATO with Ukraine, and NATO with Russia, in that order.
