Military Committee Chairman visits Egypt
During his official visit to Egypt, 22-23 January, General Ray Henault, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, met with the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Samy Hafez Anan and later with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr Ahmed Adoul Gheit, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between NATO and Egypt, as part of the Alliance's Mediteranian Dialogue.
This was a very productive visit according to General Henault. "It is clear to me that Egypt, a very influential nation in the region, wants a closer relationship with NATO but at their own pace. By taking the time to listen to their views on regional and international security issues, Egypt is more inclined to expand its relationship and cooperation with NATO", said General Henault.
Both the Foreign Minister and the Chief of Staff indicated to General Henault that Egypt would increase its military participation in Mediterranean Dialogue activities over the coming year and more importantly Egypt intends to sign the Security Agreement on the Protection of Classified Information that will open up further opportunities for cooperation and interoperability with the NATO Alliance.
