(07:40) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) SPANISH ARMY GENERAL ALFONSO PARDO - COMMANDER OF NATO FORWARD LAND FORCE SLOVAKIA
“The benefits of escalating battlegroups in larger formations are evident. The main desired effects would be deterrence against potential aggression, securing Allied territory, in this case Slovakia, and demonstrating NATO's capability to rapidly escalate from battlegroup to a brigade-size unit, which with no doubt reinforces the deterrence message”.
(08:15) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) SPANISH ARMY GENERAL ALFONSO PARDO - COMMANDER OF NATO FORWARD LAND FORCE SLOVAKIA
“Within the concept of collective defence of the Alliance, all regions are equally important. However, at this particular moment, there is no doubt that the Eastern flank is a top priority in the Alliance effort of deterrence and defence. It is very important to show that, when we defend Slovakia, we are defending all the nations inside the Alliance. And I must say that we feel perfectly integrated with our comrades from the Slovak Armed Forces in pursuit of the same goals.”
(08:51) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) SPANISH ARMY LIEUTENANT COLONEL DANIEL ALONSO RUPEREZ, COMMANDER FORWARD LAND FORCE BATTALION
“If you want peace, so be ready for war, because it is the cornerstone for deterrence, so that's what we are doing here. We are constantly rehearsing, preparing, preparing, preparing to be able to tackle one difficult situation, but better if we are not forced to do so, because we will bring out a so reliable force that nobody will dare to threaten us. But if the occasion makes it real, we will win. And that's why we are training here so hard, trying to really work out the procedures, to really creating interoperability between different nations with different systems and building up a cohesive force to be able to defend our Alliance.”
