Floods in Albania

On 7 January 2010, the EADRCC received a request for assistance from Albania. Due to continuous rainfall during November and December 2009, water levels in the lakes and on the Drini River rose. As a result, the Shkodra and Lezha regions were flooded.

More than 1200 building/houses were flooded (some partially) as well as more than 9000 ha farmland. 730 families from the district of Shkodra were evacuated from flooded areas. Many displaced families were sheltered in student dormitories provided by the Government. The rest of the displaced people were sheltered by friends and relatives.

The Albanian Government declared “the state of civil emergency” and established an Inter-ministerial Committee.
