A NATO Advanced Research Workshop on security threats to food and water chain infrastructure was held in Vienna on 3-5 December 2008, with the aim to strengthen and reinforce prevention and response programmes.
A joint initiative of NATO’s Food and Agriculture Planning Committee and the Science for Peace and Security Programme, this workshop addressed increasing concerns that chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents might be used to harm civilian populations and that food and water may be vehicles for disseminating such agents.
The workshop brought together some 100 participants, drawn from national food, agriculture and water administrations, public and private sectors, universities and the military.
NATO’s activities in this area are closely coordinated with other international organizations, such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, which attended the meeting.
