NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, took part in the first edition of the World Policy Conference in Evian, France, on 6 October.
Together with other international leaders, among them President Ilves of Estonia, Prime Minister Odinga of Kenya and President of the European Parliament Pöttering, he discussed current challenges to international security and the means to address them.
The Secretary General notably declared: "one would hope that certain unique achievements of the West could serve as an inspiration for the wider world: the sense of being part of a broader community, and the importance of institutions for turning common views into common action".
During his visit to Evian, the NATO Secretary General also held consultations with several heads of state and government.
The World Policy Conference is organised by the Institut Français des Relations Internationales. Its aim is to bring together world leaders and experts around three fundamental questions: what is the state of the world; where is the world going; what can be done to better the world?
President Sarkozy of France closed the three days of exchanges.
